CASE STUDY
Auckland Transport
Overview
Auckland Transport faced ongoing challenges with bird infestations at key railway stations, where droppings created slip hazards and compromised the cleanliness and aesthetics of public spaces. To address these concerns and improve commuter experience, Auckland Transport implemented the Symterra Pulse system at high-traffic locations, including Papatoetoe and New Lynn stations.
Challenge
Railway stations are busy transit hubs where maintaining cleanliness and safety is a top priority. However, persistent bird activity at certain stations led to an accumulation of droppings on platforms, seating areas, and walkways. This not only posed health and safety risks, but also affected the overall appearance and upkeep of the stations.
Solution
Symterra Pulse was installed at Papatoetoe and New Lynn railway stations to create an environment that discourages birds from perching, roosting, and nesting. The system’s electromagnetic deterrent technology providing a humane and long-term solution, preventing birds from settling in high-risk areas without causing them harm.
Results
Since installation, Auckland Transport has observed a marked reduction in bird presence at these locations. The improved cleanliness and reduction of slip hazards has improved commuter safety and comfort. The system has proven to be an effective, low-maintenance solution for managing unwanted bird activity.
