CASE STUDY
Department of Corrections
Overview
The Department of Corrections faced ongoing health and safety challenges caused by bird infestations across multiple prison facilities. Pigeons were nesting on rooftops and ledges, leading to contamination risks from droppings and potential structural damage. Seeking a long-term solution, the Department turned to Symterra Pulse, our advanced electromagnetic bird deterrent system.
Challenge
Corrections facilities are large, high-security environments where traditional bird control methods, such as netting or spikes, are difficult to install and maintain. Pigeon infestations at Christchurch Men's and Women's Prisons were particularly problematic.
Solution
Symterra Pulse was trialled at Christchurch Men's and Women's Prisons to evaluate its effectiveness in deterring pigeons from nesting. The system's electromagnetic deterrent technology created an environment that birds instinctively avoided, preventing roosting and nesting without harming the animals.
Results
The trials was a success, with significant reductions in bird presence and an immediate improvement in site cleanliness and maintenance. Following these positive outcomes, Symterra Pulse was rolled out to additional facilities, including Spring Hill Corrections Facility in the Waikato.
